The Story Behind Wholeistic You: From Survival to Healing

If you’ve ever wondered why I’m so passionate about trauma healing, nervous system regulation, mindfulness and helping others reconnect with themselves, the answer is simple:

This work is personal.

I wasn’t raised in an environment where peace came naturally.

I was born to young parents in Poland. Like many families, they carried their own struggles while trying to build a life together. When I was eight years old, we immigrated to the United States in search of hope and new opportunities.

What many people don’t see is that starting over in a new country isn’t just a new beginning. It can be frightening, overwhelming and full of uncertainty.

My parents didn’t speak English and as the oldest child, I quickly became the translator, the problem solver and the one expected to navigate a world I barely understood myself. Before I was old enough to fully understand adulthood, I was helping with phone calls, paperwork, appointments and responsibilities that most children never have to carry.

At school, I was trying to learn a new language while being bullied for being different.

At home, there was conflict that left me feeling constantly on edge.

I hoped to find connection with extended family members and peers, but instead I was often dismissed or excluded and felt like I was on the outside looking in.

Without realizing it, my nervous system learned that being on high alert was the safest way to live.

I became the responsible one.

The strong one.

The one who kept going.

From the outside, I looked like I was doing well. I worked hard in school and always tried to do the right thing. But inside, I was carrying anxiety, sadness and responsibilities that no child should have to carry.

As I grew older, I found myself repeating familiar patterns.

I entered relationships where I ignored red flags because chaos felt familiar. I loved deeply, while recognizing that I was accepting less than I deserved. Healing has been about learning the difference between loving someone and abandoning myself in the process.

For a long time, I thought these experiences were ‘my normal.’  It wasn’t until much later-through education, therapy and my own healing- that I realized how deeply early experiences shape our nervous systems, our relationships and the way we view ourselves and the world around us. It would take many years—and many painful experiences—for me to understand something life-changing:

Our childhood doesn’t just shape our memories.

It shapes our nervous system.

It shapes what feels familiar.

It shapes what we believe we deserve.

But it doesn’t have to determine where our story ends.

Healing wasn’t one moment.

It wasn’t one therapy session, one book or one breakthrough.

Healing became a series of small choices.

Learning about trauma.

Understanding my nervous system.

Setting boundaries.

Practicing mindfulness.

Finding compassion for myself.

Healing unprocessed emotions.

Choosing peace, even when chaos felt more familiar.

Those experiences didn’t just change my life.

They changed the direction of my career.

But even after becoming a therapist, I wasn’t immune to the effects of trauma. Knowledge alone doesn’t erase old wounds. Healing required me to face patterns in my life, including leaving a 20 year marriage to prioritize my healing, emotional well-being and safety.

Today, as a licensed clinical social worker, trauma therapist and yoga teacher, I have the privilege of walking alongside others as they begin their own healing journeys.

Not because I have all the answers.

But because I understand what it feels like to survive.

And I also know what it feels like to begin living.

Wholeistic You was created because I believe healing is possible.

Not perfect healing.

Not linear healing.

Real healing.

The kind that teaches you that your past may explain your pain, but it doesn’t have to define your future.

If you’ve spent years surviving, I hope this reminds you of something important:

You are not broken.

Your nervous system adapted to what you experienced.

And with the right support, safety and compassion, healing is possible.

At Wholeistic You, I offer trauma-informed therapy and holistic approaches to support you as you heal, grow and create the life that feels aligned with who you truly are.

Thank you for allowing me to share a piece of my story.

With Compassion,

Monika Danowski Domke
